The Himalayan chew that outlasts them all.
Churpi is a hard, slow chewing cheese made from yak and cow milk, shaped by mountain tradition and loved by dogs everywhere.
What is churpi?
Churpi, also spelled chhurpi and often sold as Himalayan dog chew, is a hard cheese from the high Himalayas. It is made from the boiled and hardened milk of yaks, cows, or a mix of both.
It is one of the hardest natural cheeses in the world, which is exactly why it makes such a patient, long lasting chew. Dogs can work on a single piece for hours, sometimes days.
- Made from
- Yak milk, cow milk, or a blend
- Curdled with
- A little lime juice or buttermilk, plus a pinch of salt
- Finished by
- Pressing, sun-drying and often smoking over a fire

How churpi is made
The method is simple and very old. It takes patience more than ingredients.
- 1
Boil the milk
Fresh yak or cow milk is heated in large pots.
- 2
Curdle it
A small amount of lime juice or buttermilk, with a pinch of salt, separates the curds.
- 3
Press into blocks
The curds are wrapped in cloth and pressed into solid blocks.
- 4
Dry and smoke
Blocks are sun-dried, often smoked for weeks, until rock hard.
Why dogs love it
One simple, natural ingredient list, and a chew that does real work.
Long-lasting
As one of the hardest natural cheeses, it gives hours or even days of chewing.
Good for teeth
The hard chewing action helps scrape away plaque and tartar.
100% natural
No artificial preservatives, chemicals, plastics or glues, unlike synthetic bones or rawhides.
Nutritious
Rich in protein, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and a range of vitamins.
Easy to digest
Modern dog-chew production removes almost all of the lactose, so most dogs digest it comfortably.
Nothing goes to waste
When your dog has chewed a chew down to a small end piece, turn it into a crunchy, puffed cheese treat.
- Soak the end piece in water for a few minutes.
- Microwave it until it puffs up and turns crunchy.
- Let it cool fully before giving it to your dog.
Puffed pieces come out very hot, so always check the temperature first.
Chewing safely
Hard chews are best enjoyed with supervision. Choose a size suited to your dog, offer fresh water, and take the chew away if it cracks or becomes small enough to swallow whole. If you are unsure whether churpi suits your dog, ask your vet.
